This project emerged from the integrated business development plan for both the Caulfield and Sandown Racecourses owned by the Melbourne Racing Club.
It envisaged the capacity to cater for a circa Melbourne Cup day crowd of 100,000 people, so the Sandown Grandstand as built is one of the largest in Australia.
The challenge was to make a smaller crowd more comfortable in its vast spaces.
Bate Design developed an entry forecourt to hide the vast façade and to funnel patrons to a circulation tower with escalators.
Hospitality spaces were improved to focus on the track with the floor area able to act as a function venue greatly increasing the Club’s function business.
Sandown has thus become a much more pleasant place to attend for a race meeting or corporate function.
